Storm Amy bears down on Ireland – serious risk to trees and property expected

Storm Amy Thumbnail with a map and storm.

Ireland is bracing for Storm Amy, with multiple wind warnings in effect and forecasters warning of potential damage and disruption from strong gusts.

Wind warnings and expected impacts

A Status Orange wind warning has been issued for five western counties – Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo – from 2 pm to 10 pm tomorrow, as Storm Amy approaches.
A Status Yellow wind warning remains in place for the rest of the country.
Forecasters say “near gale-force to gale-force” winds could bring fallen trees, power outages, wave overtopping and loose debris across exposed areas.
Met Éireann has emphasized the need for preparation — “wet and very windy conditions” will accompany the storm.

What this means for trees, hedges & safety

For homes and properties with trees, hedges, or landscape features, Storm Amy poses several hazards:

  • Falling branches or uprooting – especially for weakened, poorly rooted, or overextended trees
  • Flying debris – loose branches, garden furniture, or cut branches can become projectiles
  • Damage to fences or structures – trees or branches falling onto fences, walls, sheds, or power lines
  • Blockages & cleanup – fallen limbs may block access or create hazards after the storm

Given the potential for damage, now is the time to assess risk and act ahead of the worst conditions.
