Tree Surgery FAQ

What is tree surgery?

Tree surgery, also known as arboriculture, is the practice of cultivating, managing, and caring for individual trees. It involves the application of scientific techniques to promote the health and safety of trees, as well as to enhance their aesthetic and functional qualities within a specific environment. Tree surgeons, or arborists, are professionals trained in the field of arboriculture and are responsible for the care and maintenance of trees.

The tasks performed by tree surgeons include:

  • Pruning: This involves selectively removing branches or parts of a tree to improve its structure, shape, and health. Pruning can also be done for safety reasons, to eliminate dead or hazardous branches.
  • Tree Removal: Sometimes, trees need to be removed due to disease, damage, or safety concerns. Tree surgeons use specialised equipment and techniques to safely fell and remove trees.
  • Tree Planting: Arborists may be involved in selecting appropriate tree species for a particular location and planting them correctly to ensure healthy growth.
  • Tree Health Care: Monitoring and treating trees for diseases, pests, and nutritional deficiencies are important aspects of tree surgery. This may involve applying pesticides, fertilizers, or other treatments.
  • Consultation and Assessment: Tree surgeons often assess the health and condition of trees, providing recommendations for maintenance or removal based on their findings. They may also advise on issues such as tree preservation during construction projects.
  • Emergency Services: In the case of storm damage or other emergencies, tree surgeons may be called upon to remove fallen or hazardous trees quickly and safely.
  • It’s important to note that tree surgery requires knowledge of tree biology, physiology, and safety protocols. Hiring a certified and experienced tree surgeon is recommended for proper tree care and maintenance.

How much does a tree surgeon cost?

The cost of tree surgery can vary widely depending on several factors. Some of the key factors influencing the cost of tree surgery include:

  • Tree Size and Type: Larger and more mature trees generally require more time, effort, and equipment to work on, leading to higher costs. The type of tree also matters, as different species may have different characteristics affecting the complexity of the job.
  • Tree Health and Condition: The overall health and condition of the tree can impact the cost. Diseased or damaged trees may require more extensive work, such as disease treatment, which can increase the overall cost.
  • Location and Accessibility: The location of the tree, as well as its accessibility, can affect the cost of tree surgery. Trees situated in hard-to-reach areas or close to structures may require more careful planning and specialised equipment.
  • Services Needed: The specific services required, such as pruning, removal, wood chipping or stump grinding will contribute to the overall cost. More complex tasks or additional services will generally result in higher prices.
  • Professional Qualifications: Hiring a certified and experienced arborist or tree surgeon may come with a higher cost, but it ensures quality work and adherence to safety standards.
  • Location: Cutting trees in built up areas may require partial road closures. Find out more about our tree services in Galway, Limerick & Clare.

What is a tree surgeon called?

A tree surgeon is also commonly referred to as an arborist. The term “arborist” is derived from the Latin word “arbor,” meaning tree. Arborists are trained professionals who specialise in the cultivation, management, and care of trees. They have expertise in tree biology, physiology, and proper tree care practices.

Arborists, or tree surgeons, perform a variety of tasks related to tree maintenance, including pruning, tree removal, tree planting, disease diagnosis and treatment and overall tree health assessment. They often work to ensure the well-being of individual trees in both urban and natural settings. Additionally, arborists may be involved in consulting on tree-related issues, such as planning for tree preservation in construction projects.

Hiring a certified arborist is recommended for all professional tree care services.
